Industrial Felt

Industrial Felt

Industrial felt is made from various types of felt, both synthetic and natural. It is used to facilitate better distribution of pressure, level out uneven surfaces and prevent cracks and lateral displacement. The choice of felt type depends on whether it is to be used for heavy or light construction applications.

Properties of industrial felt

Industrial felt is a collective term for different types of felt used for the same purpose. Industrial felt can be made from wool felt, needle felt (synthetic felt) and steel felt. The properties of the material depend on the type of felt chosen. For example, wool felt is resistant to external influences, needle felt is very strong and resistant to wear and tear, and steel felt is suitable for heavier bearings that require better insulation properties. This is because it provides good sound insulation and shock absorption and reduces vibrations effectively when subjected to high loads. All types of industrial felt are known for their good heat/cold and sound insulating properties. When used in bearings, it will absorb vibrations and create better thermal bridge insulation between wall and floor.

Uses of industrial felt

Industrial felt is used to prevent cracks and lateral displacement, facilitate better distribution of pressure, and level out uneven surfaces. It is often used in prefab and new construction. Other common bearings for which it is used include system floors and floating floors, concrete bearings on sand-lime brick walls and with partition walls. It is also widely used in metal and steel structures, such as steel beams. Industrial felt in the form of steel felt is used for heavy bearing applications in which there is the potential for horizontal displacement, and where there is a need to accommodate edge stresses due to angular displacements. Synthetic industrial felt in the form of needle felt is also used for somewhat heavier constructions, but without horizontal displacements. Examples include supports for beams and plates, in order to accommodate edge stresses. Industrial felt in the form of wool felt can be used for very light bearings involving little to no horizontal displacement.
